Doug's celebration of life

The Kingston Canadian Film Festival and D.J. Falconer Event Committee will present an evening of Films, Movies and Fundraising presentations in honor of a great friend to sports, the arts and music industry. Doug was a professional football player, movie actor and for the last 20 plus years of his life a successful movie producer.

A great night of entertainment, friendship, and some great stories from Doug’s closest friends.

July 25th, 2021, we lost a great one in D.J. Falconer. Doug was born in Calgary Alberta and his dependent days led him to several military bases with his family. His dad Don was a miliary man, served in World War 11 and a Korean veteran. In the early 70’s Doug lived at CFB Kingston and attended LaSalle Secondary and St. Lawrence College. He went on to attend Ottawa University and played football for the GG’s. In 1975 his team went undefeated and won the CIAU championship. Doug was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts and went on to a successful football career in the CFL and in 1976 he won a Grey Cup with the Ottawa Rough Riders. We all remember the Hail Mary Pass to wide receiver Tony Gabriel from the legend quarterback Tom Clements.

In 1981 Doug moved to Los Angeles California to pursue a career in the movie business. Doug started acting and moved further into the movie producing business and eventually created Falconer Pictures. In 2016 he moved back to Ottawa Canada and continued his movie business.

Doug was building great success in the movie business producing films like “FORSAKEN” starring Kiefer and Donald Sutherland, “Daughter of the Wolf” staring Richard Dreyfuss and his last film 2021 “Dangerous” starring Scott Eastwood and local Kingstonian Brock Morgan. Doug had the pleasure of working with Tommy Lee Jones in a movie he produced “Wander”. In the fall of 2021, he moved to Kingston and continued his work on numerous movie deals. Doug’s career was on the rise until that fateful day he suffered a massive heart attack. Doug was 69 years old.

In honor of our dear friend and teammate, Douglas John, we are hosting an event at the Blu Martini to raise funds to support three of his passions.

The Douglas J. Falconer Scholarship Fund

Awards represent the continuing embodiment of some of what our friend and colleague Douglas John represented in his life. It’s a gesture, encouragement for recognized qualities and merit, honoring dedication, and achievement.

Doug’s positivity and attitude toward other efforts to excel are acknowledged by the two awards described below. He remained open to helping younger people advance through his own personal experience, struggles, success, maturity, generosity, and view on connectivity.

Doug’s positivity and attitude toward other efforts to excel are acknowledged by the two awards described below. He remained open to helping younger people advance through his own personal experience, struggles, success, maturity, generosity, and view on connectivity.

1. Kingston Athletic Scholarship. In cooperation with the Ottawa GG’s Football 1881 Club, we announce “The Doug Falconer GG’s Bursary” presented to a Kingston and Area Athlete to attend Ottawa University Varsity Sports.

2. In partnership with the Kingston Canadian Film Festival. We announce The Douglas J. Falconer Award of Excellence in Film to be presented annually to a principal actor, movie producer, director or other category selected each year the festival is hosted.

All proceeds donated to Doug’s scholarship fund will be used to cover the annual ongoing costs of the bursary cash awards. We hope over time this fund will grow to represent and contribute to young people in either field that display the same drive and dedication Doug had to whatever he took on his life.

All proceeds from this event will go directly to support the following three causes:

Kingston Film Festival

Doug brought his movies to the festival whenever possible as his passion for film making was one of his core drives throughout his life. We would like to continue his film making legacy through recognizing a young producer/director with an award in Doug’s name.

“The Kingston Experiment” with local artist Ryan Lewis

Doug absolutely loved music of all variations. On any given weekend, Doug was commonly known to be visiting local artists throughout Kingston as he enjoyed supporting his local brethren. We want to acknowledge Doug’s work in the arts and present the Joe Chitlin Music Lending Library with a donation of new equipment.

Ottawa GG’s Alumni

Doug worked tirelessly on the Ottawa GG’s Alumni (1881 Football Alumni) and initiated a bursary for a young football athlete in Kingston. Doug worked with his great friend and teammate Neil Lumsden and the GG Executive to establish an annual bursary for something similar.
